Nelfa: Fundamental rights are not negotiable

NELFA Board member Eleni Maravelia recently presented her own case before the European Parliament’s Committee on Petitions in Brussels: Freedom of movement for rainbow families within the EU!

The Network of European LGBTIQ* Families Associations, NELFA, is full of hope after a very successful presentation in a meeting of the EP’s Committee on Petitions. Board member Eleni Maravelia, a Greek national living in Spain, reported on her own experiences with the non-acceptance of legal documents which were already decreed in another Member State. In her case, the obstacles with a birth certificate could have been even life-threatening.

Chair Cecilia Wikström was very favourable and made some interesting conclusions:

1. The Committee wants to write a letter to Greece (Eleni’s home country)

2. Wikström urges the EU Commission to write a statement with regard to the recent Coman case (motto: What next?).

3. She suggests a “public event” – together with the EP’s Intergroup on LGBTI Rights. And…

4. The Committee wants to contact the Council of the EU to discuss further steps.
